Caspa "Back to '93"

LTJ Bukem in a dubstep style. Claustrophobic in a way but very spacious for the genre. Anyone familiar with early 90's vintage Drum and Bass (back when there was Jungle and Drum and Bass and before the explosion of the myriad of "steps") will immediately feel the time warp waves come over them as they are taken back in time. The dubstep tint is there but ever so lightly.

Mew "Introducing The Palace Players"

This Danish trio is the perfect launch for this experiment. Quirky, unique, progressive and poppy are all words that could be used to describe Mew. Angelic, gorgeous and peculiar great descriptors for singer Jonas Bjorre's voice. This song is a perfect example of what they do exceptionally well. A funky rhythm consisting of a syncopated drum pattern and jangly guitars starts the tune off before it settles down. Mew's idea of settlig down is no basic 4/4 rhythm though and just as it gets more accessible Jonas' shrill voice takes off. To further fill out the song lush keyboards are heavily laden throughout. Sade meets Yes? Heaven's house band? Their technical proficiency but light pop sensibility is a joyful listen to start my day. Lyrically it appears to be a sad song about a broken relationship. While this is no new concept i'll give them points for masking it behind such beautiful execution.

Inspired by blogger Jason Mulgrew's recent project to rate individually every song in his iTunes I am attempting to review a selection of the music I listen to on a daily basis. Since my collection is over 70 days of music, and growing daily, it is highly improbable I will ever finish. I listen to a random segment of music daily on my hour plus commute to and from work daily so there will be no shortage of variety. As long as I keep to it.

Blogger to iPhone writing has technical limitations so this will be an exercise for me. I'm not used to being concise.

Royalty Rates To Go Down For Songwriters & Music Publishers

This is from many other sources everywhere. Basically, as soon as artist's find a way to make more money, some government organization finds a way to TAKE more money from said artists.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is demanding that a panel of copyright judges lower the rate of royalties given to music publishers and songwriters.

The RIAA believes that the current rate of royalties is "out of touch with reality" and feels it's time for the government to take action. The government hasn't adjusted the royalty rate since 1981 forcing music publishers, songwriters and labels to make their own deal. The RIAA cites that the rate changes are needed because the music industry has changed in the past 25 years.

"While record companies and music publishers were able to agree on royalty rates during that 25-year period, the assumptions on which those decisions were based have changed beyond recognition," the RIAA said in a statement.

According to the RIAA, though piracy runs rampant in the music industry, music publishers have seen a hike in royalties due to ringtones sales.

"Mechanical royalties currently are out of whack with historical and international rates," RIAA executive VP and general counsel Steven Marks explained. "We hope the judges will restore the proper balance by reducing the rate and moving to a more flexible percentage rate structure so that record companies can continue to create the sound recordings that drive revenues for music publishers."

I recently was introduced to a Glasgow band named Biffy Clyro. Their singer has a resemblance to Brandon Boyd of Incubus. He also screams his ass off other times. (What happened Brandon....where'd you leave your balls?)
Anyways, I have only given the album Infinity Land a chance as of yet but so far, so good.

I now post to Fiftyone:Fiftyone as their official music reviewer. I hope to post more of my own interesting things that might not fit in with the Fiftyone:Fiftyone stylee here.

Check LaLa for anyone that has a lot of CDs they want to trade away for new stuff but are sick of used stores. They also contribute money to an artist support fund! So give back to musicians while getting new music (or old CDs you once sold away...like i did with Saigon Kick.)
